Apple's macOS is currently seeing improvements when it comes to its adoption rate. In the latest statistics from Statcounter, it became the world's second most-used operating system globally.

Currently, its 21.38% adoption rate is impressive enough to surpass other competitors including Linux and ChromeOS.

The Rise of MacOS 

While Windows continues to maintain its stronghold as the leading desktop operating system with a commanding 68.15% adoption rate, the rise of macOS signifies a noteworthy shift in the industry landscape. 

Chrome OS and Linux trail behind with adoption rates of 4.15% and 3.08%, respectively. An unidentified operating system holds a 3.23% share, which may potentially be an undetected Windows update.

According to Apple Insider, December was the peak month in 2022 when macOS usage drastically skyrocketed to almost 22%.

Intriguing Adoption Pattern on macOS

Delving into the chart illustrating macOS adoption reveals an intriguing pattern. After a minor decline from June to August 2022, macOS experienced a resurgence from August to October. 

Another temporary decline was observed leading up to December. However, since then, macOS has witnessed a consistent and gradual increase in adoption.

Role of New Mac Releases

Although Apple did not release new Mac models in December 2022, the tide turned in January 2023 with the introduction of MacBook Pro models featuring the powerful M2 Pro and M2 Max chips. 

This launch likely played a significant role in driving the increased adoption of macOS, as the operating system is exclusively available on Macs.

The allure of high-performance computers combined with the exclusive macOS experience proved irresistible to users seeking cutting-edge technology.

Reasons Behind the Surge in macOS Adoption

The rise in popularity of macOS can stem from various factors. For instance, its user-friendly UI might have captivated the users to switch from their current OS to macOS. What's more, its sleek design is also eye-catching, especially for first-time users.

Furthermore, macOS seamlessly integrates with other Apple devices and services, creating a cohesive ecosystem that enhances user convenience and productivity.

In addition, Apple's unwavering focus on security and privacy has further propelled macOS adoption. Advanced features like Gatekeeper, FileVault, and encryption fortify the operating system's defenses, earning the trust of users who prioritize data protection and privacy.

Is macOS Safe Against Viruses?

PCMag detailed in its July 10 report a short comparison between macOS and Windows when it comes to safety.

While Mac users prevailed in using 2FA, identity theft monitoring, password generator, complex passwords, end-to-end encryption, fingerprint and facial recognition, and regular device backup, it's still not spared from welcoming security threats.

In fact, only 34% of users install system updates on their Mac devices immediately compared to Windows users at 48%.

The common notion that Macs can't get viruses is not true. Still, users should regularly update the security features on their devices to avoid losing their data.
